Level Z: The Mystic Level            In chapter 2 and 3 of the Guide for the Perplexed, Schumacher describes the different levels of being that comprise the experience of reality. He addresses the fact that scientism tends to reduce all the complex levels of reality into one flat horizontal plane. He points out the common scientific notion that life, consciousness and self-awareness is just an accident; a coincidence that is somehow born of inanimate matter. Schumacher rejects this and instead tries to create a picture of reality with a vertical level. He regards reality as a hierarchal band of levels of being. (I like to think of it like a
